5M-5 Lions Gift Helps Finance Accessible Van for Camp Courage
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 18, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent $22,000 from the District 5M-5 Lions, matched by a grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation, enabled hundreds of Camp Courage participants have more accessible fun this past summer.
Funding from LCIF was used to purchase a wheelchair accessible van for Camp Courage. For more than 50 years, Camp Courage, located in Maple Lake, Minn., has offered a variety of camping programs for people with disabilities. Because of its location, there are no accessible public transportation options to get campers to and from camp. The van was used to take campers on overnight excursions during the camping season. At least 100 campers benefitted from the accessible van this year alone.
"The new van is a crucial addition to our daily summer programs at Camp Courage. Thanks to the generosity of the 5M-5 Lions, campers who use wheelchairs could be transported while remaining in their wheelchair which is a safe and comfortable option for many," said Maria Schugel, manager of Camp Programs.
District 5M-5 Lions, which includes 40 chapters in the northern and western Minneapolis suburbs, have been donors and friends of Camp Courage for more than 30 years including hosting an annual Halloween party for children with disabilities.
