WHY: The Commerce Department is expected to present the results of the Section 232 investigation later this month. Since 2009, more than 4,000 American aluminum workers have lost their jobs due to the global excess capacity crisis caused largely by continued and sustained subsidization by foreign governments of their domestic aluminum industries. To make matters worse, the increased reliance on aluminum imports puts our defense and critical infrastructure at risk, as they are used in used in everything from ships, tanks, and armaments to bridges, rail systems, our electrical grid, and energy infrastructure. After receiving the investigation results, President Trump will have 90 days to determine a course of action— that may potentially help save thousands of U.S. aluminum jobs.
