5 Reasons Why Companies Should Celebrate Bring Your Dog to Work Day, June 23
Carlyn Montes De Oca, author of Dog as My Doctor, Cat as My Nurse, says dogs should be allowed at work every day.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- June 23 is the 18th annual Bring Your Dog to Work Day, a day in which corporate America is encouraged to officially go to the dogs. Carlyn Montes De Oca, an author, animal advocate and human health expert, is a huge supporter of the holiday. As the author of Dog as My Doctor, Cat as My Nurse: An Animal Lover's Guide to a Healthy, Happy & Extraordinary Life which came out in April, she wants to see more companies and employees take advantage of Bring Your Dog to Work Day and the healing properties of dogs in general.
Montes De Oca cites five reasons why dogs belong in the workplace:
- Dogs serve as canine collaborators. They encourage people to talk to each other face to face and not just through email and text messages.
- Dogs are naturals when it comes to busting stress. Just stroking a dog's fur lowers people's blood pressure.
- Dogs encourage people to take breaks and get out of their office chairs. Not only does this improve people's health but it also allows their brain to work better. Which leads to her next point …
- Dogs inspire creativity.
- Dogs create happier workplaces, helping with employee retention.
Research supports Montes De Oca's points including a March 2016 survey by Banfield Pet Hospital in Vancouver, Wash. Banfield queried more than 1,000 employees and 200 human resource decision makers from companies across the U.S. to ask their opinions on the benefits of having dogs in the workplace. Seven out of ten respondents viewed the practice positively.
