4th Grader Awarded a Teacher Grant for Classroom Materials
SACRAMENTO, Calif., April 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Ryder Roberts, a fourth grade student at Franklin Elementary School in Elk Grove, CA, was awarded a $300 teacher grant to buy instructional materials for his classroom after he applied for a "2017 Education Matters Grant" through a program offered by Schools Financial Credit Union. In his grant application, the fourth grader wrote that he was applying on behalf of his teacher, Ms. Laura McFarland.
An excerpt from Ryder's application:
"…I know my teacher uses her own money to buy things for our classroom… She always makes sure we have everything needed. This would be nice to win, because she wouldn't have to purchase more things with her own money..."
"We were very impressed with the initiative this young man showed by completing an application for our '2017 Education Matters Grants' program to help his teacher and his classmates," said Schools Financial Credit Union President/CEO, Tim Marriott. "It definitely reflects well on Ms. McFarland that one of her students would go to this length to help her."
About the Education Matters Grant Program
The social media-based grant program, which reached tens of thousands of people, was created to fulfill the needs of classroom teachers who lack necessary instructional materials to successfully engage students. Applicants were asked to describe the curriculum materials needed, and how they'd be used, in a short form on Schools Financial's Facebook page. More than 400 teachers applied for grants through the program, and 13 $300 grants were awarded. Among the materials that will be purchased with the grants: early skills development materials for homeless pre-K children, a Chromebook to access teaching apps, a variety of textbooks and colorful manipulatives to help special needs students learn more effectively.
