"We are very proud to present the Supergirl Jam for its fourth year," said Karen McTier, Executive Vice President of Domestic Licensing and Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. "It's an honor to once again provide an opportunity for these young women to take center stage and be applauded for their talent, dedication and inspiration. These competitors do a great tribute to the iconic Supergirl brand and S-shield emblem by embodying and displaying the strength, independence and empowerment for which they stand."
On June 30, the Supergirl Jam recognizes the sport's emerging skateboarding talent with the Supergirl Am Jam at SKATELAB, a premiere Southern California indoor skate park. The event features a skateboard street contest featuring the top amateur skaters in the U.S. and offers the winner a spot in the pro competition during the Venice Beach Supergirl Jam. Last year, Abby Zsarnay (Ventura, CA) took top amateur honors at the Woodward event and competed with the pros in Venice.
In Oceanside, CA on August 14, surfing's best 20-and-under females will be under the spotlight when the Supergirl Pro Junior takes to the waters at the Oceanside Pier in conjunction with the 26th Annual Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club Contest and Beach Festival. A Grade-4 event on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Pro Junior Series, the Supergirl Pro Junior boasts the richest purse in Pro Junior history and attracts the sports most talented stars, including the 2008 U.S. Open of Surf champion and world's current #1 female junior pro surfer Malia Manuel (Kauai, HI) as well as Carissa Moore (Honolulu, HI), #1 on Surfer Magazine's Hot 100 list and the youngest surfer to win the Triple Crown event at Haleiwa in 2008.
The following weekend, on August 22 at Venice Beach, the ladies will hit the slopes – made possible by 80,000 pounds of man-made snow that will drop on the beach – to compete in the Snowboarding Rail Jam. Two-time champion Laurie Currier (Incline Village, CA) is expected to defend her title, with former Supergirl Snowboard Rail Jam medalists Chanelle Sladics (Newport Beach, CA) and Leanne Pelosi (Vancouver, CAN) as well as a host of other top pros determined to thwart a three-peat.
In addition to snowboarding on the beach, the Venice event features thirty of the very best skateboarding and inline skating pros competing on a custom-built street course designed to challenge their board and rail skills. Injured in 2009, the 2008 Supergirl Jam Skateboard Street champion Lauren Perkins (Huntington Beach, CA) returns in an attempt to recapture the title that Amy Caron (Huntington Beach, CA) claimed last year.
Indicative of the Supergirl Jam's global reach, Rampworx Skate Park in Liverpool, England held the first international qualifier to the Supergirl Jam, with the winners from both Skateboard Street and Inline Street contests invited to compete at Venice Beach.
"ASA Entertainment creates action sports events all around the world and we are very excited to bring the Supergirl Jam back for the fourth year," said ASA Entertainment CEO Rick Bratman, producer of the Supergirl Jam. "With great partners like Warner Bros. and DC Comics, this series was built to inspire young women and provide opportunities for these amazing artists to showcase their skills. ASA is really proud to help promote these world-class athletes and be a part of the incredible progression in female action sports."
The empowerment of the Supergirl brand in the world of lifestyle sports recently expanded when Warner Bros., on behalf of DC Comics, and JCPenney announced a partnership with Olympic Gold Medal-winning gymnast, Nastia Liukin, to create Supergirl by Nastia, an apparel line for young girls, available exclusively at JCPenney locations nationwide - and jcp.com - beginning July 20. JCPenney is a sponsor of this year's Supergirl Jam.
"Creating exciting engagement opportunities is key to reaching our younger customers," said Clark McNaught, senior vice president and general merchandise manager of JCPenney's children's division. "With our sponsorship of the Supergirl Jam we are able to bring the Supergirl by Nastia brand experience directly to customers in our local markets. Supergirl by Nastia is all about celebrating girl empowerment and a positive self image and our participation with the Supergirl Jam - featuring inspirational female athletes - is a perfect vehicle for underscoring this message."
All of the Supergirl Jam events are free to spectators and expect to play before more than 100,000 fans. CBS, Fox Sports Net (FSN) and FUEL TV will combine to air more than eight hours of national television coverage about the event this fall.
