4th Annual Miss Miami Gardens Pageant Heats Up the Runway to Support Education for Young Women
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The City of Miami Gardens will host its 4th Annual Miss Miami Gardens Scholarship Pageant, Saturday, February 27, 2010, 7:00 PM at the Lou Rawls Center for the Performing Arts, located on the campus of Florida Memorial University at 15800 Northwest 42nd Avenue, Miami Gardens, FL.
The scholarship pageant is a franchise partner of the acclaimed Miss America Organization and the young lady that is crowned Miss Miami Gardens 2010 will advance to participate in the Miss Florida Pageant, where she will have an opportunity to compete for the coveted Miss America title.
Many of the of the young ladies participating in the Miss Miami Gardens pageant are from single parent homes with several siblings, and this pageant along with several other City sponsored initiatives serves as evidence of the City's support in creating a brighter future for the young women. Participants in the Miss Miami Gardens Pageant are young women between the ages of 17-24 that either aspire to, or currently attend a college or university in the City of Miami Gardens. After speaking with several of the contestants, one trait they all share is the type of determination that battles adversity. Two-time contestant, Janey Tate states "I am competing again in the Miss Miami Gardens pageant because I fell in love with the Miss America Organization because of what it represents, which is style, service, scholarship, and success. I sincerely want to represent my home town, Miami Gardens, on the state and national level to showcase to the world what Miami Gardens does produce."
The contestants for the Miss Miami Gardens pageant undergo a rigorous screening process, which includes opportunities for the young ladies to display their public speaking/interviewing skills in addition to a strong background in community service. During the actual competition the young ladies will have an opportunity to showcase their talent, beauty, and intellect to an audience of their peers and judges.
Miss America 2004, Miss Florida 2003, and "The Amazing Race" Reality TV series contestant Ericka Dunlap the first African American woman to win the Miss Florida crown will be on hand to inspire each of the young ladies to give their best not only in the pageant but in their respective communities as well. As a former Miss America and Florida, Erica strives to be the best role model possible for young women. Erica Dunlap hopes that by helping young women like the contestants in the Miss Miami Gardens Pageant, that she will be able to impact their lives in a positive way. She believes that "people may not remember what you said or did, but they will remember how you made them feel".
Tickets can be purchase at Miami City Gardens City and at the Lou Rawls Center for the Performing Arts box office on the night of the pageant for $20 which includes admission to the pre-pageant reception and a souvenir journal, or $15 for admittance to the pageant and a souvenir journal.
The winner of the Miss Miami Gardens pageant will receive a $2,500 college scholarship, the first runner-up will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and the second runner-up is awarded a $500 scholarship.
These scholarship awards are not considered as mere gifts, but will serve as investments in the future of three young women who truly deserve it.
