The 3ivx HLS Adapter solves the emerging dilemma of how to stream video from existing HTTP Live Streaming infrastructure to Windows 8 devices, including Tablets, Laptops and Smartphones. The 3ivx HLS Adapter is a unique software solution that enables broadcasters and content providers to re-use content and backend systems when targeting Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices.
The Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 market is growing rapidly since its launch in the final quarter of 2012. However Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 do not support HTTP Live Streaming, the format used to deliver video to Android and iOS devices, requiring new media back-ends, content encoding, media archival, streaming formats and content distribution. Media companies who already have significant infrastructure supporting Apple's HLS protocol face the prospect of investing in new infrastructure, or missing out on the audience. The 3ivx HLS Adapter 2.0 provides a simple solution to this potentially expensive problem.
"We've worked with a number of broadcasters to deliver the features they need, and we were able to deliver the 2.0 version of the adapter just in time for baseball season" said Stuart Espey, Technical Director at 3ivx Technologies.
The 3ivx HLS Adapter 2.0 is now compatible with CEA-608/708 captioning as required by the FCC in the USA. The CEA-608/708 standard defines the means by which closed captions are embedded within video data as it is distributed, either by the means of traditional broadcast or internet streaming. The result is that broadcasters and content owners can now meet the requirement to caption content online in HLS targeting their Windows 8 Apps using the 3ivx HLS Adapter.
The 3ivx HLS Adapter supports HTTP Live Streaming in Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 Apps for Live Streams, Live Events, Live DVR and Video On Demand and includes advanced support for AES-128 Content Protection, Authentication Services, CEA608/708/WebVTT Closed Captions/Subtitling, Discrete and Embedded Multi-language Audio, Timed Metadata as well as Adaptive Bitrate Switching, Quick-start, Go-To-Live, Fast Seeking/Scrubbing, and Trick-mode functionality.
The 3ivx HLS Adapter SDK is now available for evaluation, integration and licensing.
