37 Surplus State Properties Now Available for Public Sale
Legislation Enables Commonwealth to Present Largest Offering of State Properties for Sale in Decades
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 17, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- State General Services Secretary Sheri Phillips today announced that the passage of six bills has given the department authorization to sell 37 properties– the largest offering of properties in decades.
"We are pleased to see the General Assembly's cooperation and support of our efforts to get surplus properties off the state inventory as quickly as possible," Secretary Phillips said. "Thanks to Governor Tom Corbett's quick action in signing these pieces of legislation into law, we are able to prepare these properties to be put back into productive use and on the local tax rolls, as well as generate significant revenue and eliminate the associated carrying costs."
Phillips noted since Governor Corbett took office in 2011, 39 surplus properties have been sold, bringing in nearly $31.4 million in non-tax revenue while shedding over $5 million in expenses to maintain empty, unnecessary facilities and surrounding land.
"We have taken an aggressive approach to selling surplus properties, and it has been paying off for the Commonwealth and ultimately the taxpayers," Phillips said. "Every dollar not spent on maintaining vacant properties is another dollar that can be spent on critical programs and services."
The list of properties includes a dozen armories, two state correctional facilities, a state hospital, a youth development center, and numerous residential units among the properties that will be prepared for sale. While 37 properties have been approved for sale, ten will be directly conveyed to various buyers as specified by the authorizing legislation. Public bid solicitations will be issued for the remaining 27 properties.
