36th Hutch Holiday Gala Raises More Than $6.1 Million
Guests meet a challenge to fund research in basic sciences
SEATTLE, Dec. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The 36th anniversary Hutch Holiday Gala raised more than $6.1 million for research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
The black-tie event, held Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel, incorporated electronic guest registration at check-in and interactive, electronic tablet bidding devices for silent and wine auctions. The live auction and program featured images from the Hutchinson Center's research labs on a 244-foot wraparound video screen.
A trip to Africa – including an exclusive tour of the Uganda Cancer Institute and the future site of the UCI/Hutchinson Center Clinic and Training Institute in Kampala – raised $123,000, selling to three winning bidders for $41,000 each. The future facility will be the first collaborative comprehensive cancer center in sub-Saharan Africa.
A portion of Gala auction funds – generously matched dollar for dollar by two anonymous families – will support the Center's Basic Sciences program, aimed at eliminating cancer and related diseases. Researchers from this scientific division play a critical role in uncovering the mechanisms by which cells work and how they become altered with age, environmental and genetic manipulation.
In its 36-year history, the Hutch Holiday Gala has raised more than $81 million in support of research at the Hutchinson Center. Presented by the Grace Heffernan Arnold Guild and the Hutch Holiday Gala board of directors, the Gala featured live and silent auctions, an elegant dinner and entertainment with more than 700 business and community leaders in attendance.
