Standing out among the endless array of signs, thematic features and unique architecture in Las Vegas is no simple task; the Boulevard's sidelines are constantly animated with the latest and greatest technologies, carefully positioned to attract and entice Vegas' wide-eyed visitors. What better way to overcome these visibility challenges than to integrate the world's most vibrant and Vegas' largest LED feature into the crown of your building?
Anchored by retail giant Walgreens, the 120' tall Harmon Corner Retail Center occupies the northeast corner of one of the most dynamic intersections in Las Vegas, with high-profile neighbors including The Cosmopolitan, Aria at City Center and Planet Hollywood. Developed by BPS Partners and designed by SH Architecture, the Harmon Corner feature was envisioned as a 'digital icon' at one of North America's busiest pedestrian intersections and to command attention from all northbound traffic – even during the sunniest of Las Vegas days. Brett Torino, a principal of the development's ownership group engaged YESCO early in the design process to ensure the high level of collaboration and coordination required between the design and engineering teams. Precise integration was a high priority. "We set out to build the most unique and successful retail destination in the country and to realize our vision we engaged a world-class team. We knew that our ambitions for the LED screen would only be successful if we brought in a company with the creativity, technology and fabrication capabilities to deliver a turnkey project from concept to completion; YESCO did just that," stated Mr. Torino.
YESCO Electronics' 12mm SMD (Surface Mount Diode) technology was selected as the most appropriate due to its high brightness and contrast capabilities, along with the fact that the compact size of the individual modules could achieve the smooth radius required for the screen to 'skin' the architecture seamlessly. At approximately 310' wide by 60' tall, the enormous screen is populated with close to 11 million pixels, equating to almost 32 million RBG diodes; by far the highest resolution that has ever been accomplished at this scale.
Technology, engineering and installation feats aside, one of the most impressive components of this feature is the innovative control system that YESCO designed to deliver content to the immense screen. "It was a challenge as there were no existing products on the market that could handle playing content files this large. To avoid requiring twelve, six, or even three computers to run the screen, we worked with our partners to develop a custom hardware / software solution that is capable of running the entire display from a single and very powerful PC," explains Brian Henry, Creative and Technical Director for YESCO's special projects team.
During the initial design process, the YESCO project team began to imagine the amazing content possibilities and opportunities that would be afforded by such dimension and definition. Providing a spectacular canvas to support and display the variety of national and international brands housed within the development was the most obvious priority for such an elaborate feature, though the opportunity to become a 'must see' attraction through experiential content segments and public interactivity was never overlooked. It was decided that four hours of each day would be dedicated to custom programming ranging from "mind-blowing" content illusions to supporting artistic animations and interactive special events all designed and created to cause viewers to stop, snap, post and tweet. In a heavily themed landscape, the Harmon Corner feature has defined itself as Vegas' first digital icon.
