The students maintained high grades and excelled in honors and Advanced Placement® classes, many while volunteering in their communities, working, or both. They did this while facing significant life challenges such as homelessness, poverty, physical illness, and limited resources because of family-related health issues.
"At a time when study after study warns that many of today's students lack the skills and abilities to lead our nation in the future, we recognize today, thirty shining examples of our best and brightest young people," said Kurt Landgraf, President and CEO of Educational Testing Service (ETS). "Beyond their academic accomplishments, these students have persevered in the face of adversity and our ETS employees are honored to contribute to their future success."
Yvette Donado, Chief Administrative Officer and Senior Vice President, People, Process and Communications at ETS, presented the scholarship awards. "Each year during our 'ETS Cares' campaign, employees donate money and decide to invest it into efforts that support and embody our organizational mission — efforts that promote learning and performance and support education for all people worldwide," she said. "For the third year in a row, they decided to invest in this year's outstanding group of New Jersey students."
The fund was created in 2008 to enable company employees to make a significant investment in their communities. Since 2010, ETS staff has contributed more than $350,000 in scholarships to 108 New Jersey students.
Scholarship winners plan to attend the following higher education institutions: George Washington University, Ramapo College of N.J., Montclair State University, Seton Hall University, Quinnipiac University, Warren County Community College, Penn State University, Montclair State University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology, Stockton College of N.J., Middlesex County College, The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, Ocean County College, Farleigh Dickinson University and Salisbury University.
They intend to major in engineering/computer science, political science, music industry, education, marketing, accounting, business, communication, general science, speech language therapy, music education, game development design, marine science, psychology, restaurant management, nursing, international business, biology/premedical studies, biomedical sciences, mathematics and others.
In the past, the ECAF has funded the construction of a house for Habitat for Humanity® in Trenton, N.J., and an Education Resource Center near their headquarters in Lawrenceville, N.J.
The scholarship selection process was coordinated by ETS Scholarship & Recognition Programs, which annually administers millions of dollars in new and renewable awards for companies, organizations and agencies in the United States and abroad.
