2nd Annual Youth Sports Injury Summit At U.S. Cellular Field July 31
CHICAGO, June 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Parents and coaches are invited to learn more about preventing the most common youth sports injuries and to meet the doctors who treat many of Chicago's pro athletes at a free sports injury summit at U.S. Cellular Field, July 31, 8 am – 12:30 pm.
The second annual Sports Medicine Summit is being hosted by Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush Center for Orthopedic Education & Learning. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with some of the nation's top sports medicine specialists who are team physicians for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls. Hot topics will be discussed, including Tommy John surgery and the rise in ACL injuries. The event includes breakfast, free parking and a tour of U.S. Cellular Field.
The forum will focus on prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for youth injuries, including ankle injuries; knee pains; concussion; nutrition; skin conditions and sports injury rehabilitation and prevention. Sports medicine specialists from Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, including Drs. David Garras, Kathleen Weber, Joshua Blomgren and Jeffrey Mjaanes, will lead the interactive discussion. Immediately following the presentation a panel discussion will feature: John Byrne, Athletic Director, Wendell Phillips Academy H.S.; Shawn Walker, Baseball Coach, George Westinghouse College Prep; a Positive Coaching Alliance representative; and Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph, MOR sports medicine physician.
Experts agree that youth sports injuries are on the rise. According to Safe Kids USA, every year more than 3.5 million kids under age 14 are treated for sports injuries and nearly half of all sports injuries suffered by middle and high school students are associated with overuse. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that more than half of all youth sports injuries are preventable.
These facts will be tackled at this first-ever summit by some of the nation's top sports medicine experts.
