26-Market Survey Finds Citizens Trust Business for Solutions, Are Skeptical of Business Leaders' Motives
Survey challenges elite assumptions by viewing global attitudes through the lens of the "five G's": generations, gender, geography, graduation, and global cities
WASHINGTON, March 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Brunswick Group, an advisory firm specializing in business-critical issues, today unveiled its landmark report, Perspectives: The Five G's that Define the World - Generations, Gender, Geography, Global Cities, and Graduation. The report found that a vast majority of global citizens believe that business can provide solutions to major challenges, including quality education, economic opportunity and equality, and safety and security. Paradoxically, the report uncovered that people worldwide disagree with the priorities and reward system of and for business leaders.
The report also found that every market surveyed believes that when businesses in their country do well, everyone benefits. Additional findings include:
- Is business listening? Globally, 59% of citizens believe business leaders in their country do not really understand the challenges they face in their lives
- Hope and fear vary widely based on geography. Among emerging markets, a majority (64%) believe they are better off than their parents; only 47% of those in developed markets agree. Among developed markets, only about 1 in 4 (28%) think today's children will be better off than they are; in emerging markets, 58% believe children will be better off.
- Has globalization lost its popularity? While it is true that those in developed markets have a mixed view of globalization (36% positive vs. 23% negative), people in emerging markets are optimistic about globalization (60% positive vs. 10% negative).
- Rise of global mega-cities. Mega-city residents worldwide often have opinion patterns more similar to mega-city residents in other markets than they do with their fellow citizens in smaller cities and towns within the same market. Mega-cities are overall more supportive of global exchange of ideas.
- Opportunity for tech CEO leadership. Among business leaders, technology leaders have the greatest opportunity for leadership because, across the globe, technology is viewed as the only thing consistently getting better, faster. Globally, 69% believe technology is changing quickly in their country, and 88% believe it is changing for the better.
- Automation concerns. Data shows that between 10% and 23% of employees in various professions are aware that their jobs will be replaced by automation or cease to exist, with employees in manufacturing and financial services most likely to anticipate technology-driven unemployment.
