22 Solar Decathlon Teams Bring Global New Energy Innovation to Datong, China

DATONG, China, May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- On May 26, 2012, the 22 teams competing for the Solar Decathlon China 2013 made a group appearance to the public in the City of Datong, Shanxi Province, marking the successful close to the team selection process and the official start of the promotion phase.

Leaders from the China National Energy Administration, the U.S. Department of Energy, Shanxi Province, Datong Municipality and Peking University addressed the press at the conference, formally announcing and introducing the 22 competing teams, and looked back on the evaluation process and selection mechanism for the final teams of SD China, expressing their expectations for great achievements from the teams. Mayor Geng Yanbo outlined Datong's preparations and promotion efforts. The well-planned and detailed preparation works by the City of Datong and the Organizing Committee were fully acknowledged and praised by co-hosts China National Energy Administration and the U.S. Department of Energy. China's Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development were also represented at the press conference along with the founding sponsor, Applied Materials of the U.S., and the launching sponsor, Tianwei Group of China.

Fifteen Chinese universities, including Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Southeast University and others and twenty international universities, including the U.S. Florida International University, the Turkish Middle East Technical University, Iran Abbaspour University of Technology, Israeli Tel Aviv University, the U.K. London Metropolitan University, Australian University of Wollongong, Swiss Berne University of Applied Sciences, Swedish Chalmers University of Technology, and the National University of Singapore, have formed their own teams or joined with others in the competition. The 22 teams are from 13 countries including China, the U.S., Singapore, Sweden, Israel, the U.K., Turkey, Egypt, Malaysia, Iran, Australia, Switzerland and New Zealand. On May 27, the Organizing Committee of SD China 2013 held a schematic design review workshop focusing on the review and guidance on the designs of the competing teams. The workshop reviewed solar energy collection, efficiency of use, energy saving, energy balance, indoor environment, building technology, market potential, etc. to better present the spatial requirement in design of solar energy buildings, namely the integration of solar energy, energy saving and architectural design. The workshop stressed the need to build living spaces that offer sound and complete functions, comfort and sustainability.

The Organizing Committee of SD China 2013 is also accepting submissions for the slogan and mascot for this event from universities in China and overseas and the general public.
