OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Twenty-two Kaiser Permanente hospitals are honored for their excellence in health care in U.S. News & World Report's 2017-18 Best Hospitals study released today.
The 28th annual rankings and ratings, a well-known annual assessment of hospital care superiority, are based on evaluation of the more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide. This study is intended to help guide patients to hospitals that deliver outstanding care across 25 complex specialties, procedures and common conditions.
Eight Kaiser Permanente hospitals are in the top 10 percent in the nation — and thereby recognized as "high performing" — for eight complex specialties, including cardiology and heart surgery, cancer, pulmonology, nephrology, urology, orthopedics, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, and neurology and neurosurgery.
Among common care procedures, 18 Kaiser Permanente hospitals are "high performing" for congestive heart failure treatment and 14 are "high performing" for colon cancer surgery. In all, 22 Kaiser Permanente hospitals are rated "high performing" for at least one of the 25 specialties, procedures and common conditions.
"Kaiser Permanente's commitment to being a national leader in health care quality, service and prevention is evidenced by this study from U.S. News & World Report," said Patrick Courneya, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. "This recognition of our specialty care is directly attributable to Kaiser Permanente's evidence-based, integrated approach where we work together to foster a culture of continuous improvement and personalized service."
Ten Kaiser Permanente hospitals in California are among the state's top 50 for overall care: Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Francisco, Oakland, Downey, Roseville, Santa Clara, South Bay, Antioch and Fontana. Additionally, Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside in Clackamas, Oregon, is ranked the sixth-best hospital in the state.
"We're proud to hear the latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report place us within the top tier of hospitals nationwide," said Michael Kanter, MD, executive vice president and chief quality officer for The Permanente Federation, the national umbrella organization for the more than 21,000 physicians who provide care to Kaiser Permanente's more than 11.8 million members. "Our tens of thousands of dedicated physicians, nurses, clinicians and care teams demonstrate every day that they have a shared stake in our members' health, and these results validate that our approach to providing quality care is working."
In local and regional rankings, three Kaiser Permanente hospitals are among the top 10 in the San Francisco metropolitan area and three are among the top 20 in the Los Angeles metro area.
In its hospital analysis, U.S. News & World Report uses publicly available data such as mortality rates, volume, infection rates, staffing levels and patient satisfaction rates, among others. For more information and complete rankings, visit U.S. News & World Report.
