21st Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, a KT Press Report
KIGALI, Rwanda, April 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- This year Rwanda will mark the 21st Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi. It is an important occasion to remember the lives that were lost, to show solidarity with survivors and unite to ensure genocide never happens again – in Rwanda or elsewhere.
Kwibuka means 'to remember' in Kinyarwanda. It describes the annual commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, in which more than one million Rwandans were killed. Twenty-one years later Rwanda asks the world to unite to remember the lives that were lost, to stand against genocide denial and to recognize the incredible bravery of those who rescued others during the genocide – at great risk to themselves and their families.
Kwibuka21 is a series of events taking place in Rwanda and around the world. These events include the national commemoration in Rwanda, which begins on 7 April 2015. The genocide had begun on 7 April 1994.
Kwibuka21 will include a number of commemorative events including the lighting of the Flame of Remembrance at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, as well as commemorative events at the local level.
This year's Kwibuka activities will be focused at the community level (Umudugudu). This is in line with the decision to hold a commemorative event at the national stadium every five years. Other major national commemoration activities continue as has occurred in the past. The engagement of communities, in Rwanda and abroad, reflects an important aspect of Kwibuka: education and learning as a preventive measure against genocide.
The National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG), in partnership with survivor organizations, is spearheading Kwibuka21 activities across the country. These activities are being organized in partnership with local communities, the private sector and civil society groups.
This year's commemoration will be held under the Kwibuka pillars of Remember, Unite, Renew. The main points of discussion will be on the importance of fighting genocide denial and revision and recognizing the bravery of those who rescued others during the genocide.
