Kelly Jo Dowd, one of the original Hooters Girls, graced the cover of the 1995 Hooters Calendar and worked her way up the Hooters ranks to manager of the Palm Harbor location, inspired this effort. In 2002, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and despite radical and aggressive treatment; on May 24, 2007, Hooters suffered a tremendous loss with her passing. Through this struggle, she was courageous, becoming an advocate for early detection, education and fundraising in the battle against breast cancer.
Hooters Girls have raised over $4.7 million over the years to support breast cancer research, much of it through the Kelly Jo Dowd Breast Cancer Research Fund benefitting the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Since 1993, the V Foundation has funded more than $170 million in cancer research grants nationwide. The V Foundation awards 100 percent of direct donations to cancer research and programs. The V Foundation's endowment covers administrative expenses. For more information on the V Foundation or to make a donation, please visit jimmyv.org.
"We are excited for this year's Hooters Calendar and the National Tour and look forward to supporting Hooters goal of raising $1 million for breast cancer research," said Chuck Melcher, owner and publisher of the Hooters Calendar.
