2016 Nurse Practitioner Program Director Meeting - Hosted by NCC
CHICAGO, Sept. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Certification Corporation (NCC) is pleased to share discussions from the national Nurse Practitioner (NP) Program Directors' meeting hosted by NCC.

On August 31, 2016, a group of 70 Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) Program Directors met in Chicago to discuss NP Programs and certification, the sustainability of NP education programs, projected nationwide nurse practitioner shortages and other items impacting NP education programs.
The group spent the morning reviewing NCC certification requirements for the students and learning about new faculty tools being developed to support their work. NCC certification requirements were then followed by a review of the changes in the National Task Force on Quality Nurse Practitioner Education Guidelines for Programs.
The meeting then broke into NNP and WHNP specialty specific groups and discussed current education program issues and solutions including:
- state barriers to education
- sustainability of NP education programs
- NNP and WHNP practice research surveys
- Department of Education requirements
- barriers to preceptors across state lines
- limited availability for clinical sites
- need for student scholarships & grants
- workforce crisis in many states as more than 5% of the NNP/WHNP population will retire by 2020
The meeting helped Program Directors to connect, collaborate and share not only about the above outlined issues, but about the opportunities and importance of being a Nurse Practitioner in today's health care system. Their passion and stories will contribute to an upcoming public service announcement "Everyone deserves an NP."
These Program Directors are responsible for educating future NNPs and WHNPs and NCC supports their mission.
