2014 Survey: Find out how many Christians are having extramarital sexual affairs and how porn is the igniting fuel
LYNCHBURG, Va., Sept. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A new survey suggests that pornography is the fuel poisoning marriages at alarming rates. Over 1 in 3 (35%) married men are stepping outside of marriage by having sexual affairs, and 1 in 6 (17%) married women are cheating on their spouses. Showing no favoritism, affairs are infecting Christian marriages at the same rate as it is crippling marriages nationwide. In addition, if a married man has an affair, it's likely to be repeated. Three-fourths of men who admit to having had an affair also admit to having more than one affair, and 3 in 10 (31%) admit to having more than 5 different affairs. These numbers are documented in a new survey by Proven Men Ministries (www.ProvenMen.org) and conducted by Barna Group among a nationally representative sample of 500 U.S. adults nationwide that are or had been married.
"The rate of extramarital affairs appears to have a correlation to frequency of viewing pornography," according to Joel Hesch, who sponsored the survey and is the founder of Proven Men Ministries. "A married person who views porn several times a month is ripe to have an affair. Specifically, another part of the survey showed that 40% of married men watch porn at least several times a month, which compares to 35% of married men having affairs. Similarly, 22% of married women view porn at least several times a month and 17% of married women have affairs. The survey also shows that twice as many married men have affairs as married women, which corresponds to twice as many married men watching porn as married women."
"We should not be shocked that marriages are crumbling through affairs because the majority of married men are regularly viewing pornography," according to Hesch. "It is little surprise that the more frequently a married person looks at porn, which is often a form of sexually fantasizing about someone other than their spouse, the more likely they will act upon their fantasy through a sexual affair."
What's the solution for someone who had an affair or is toying with the idea?
Proven Men developed a 12-week at-home system to help men win the battle with porn or sexual addiction. This system also strengthens existing marriages, as well as preparing singles for marriage. It includes a 12-week course of study, a leadership guide and a book on sexual integrity—all available on Amazon. Our website also has free resources.
"This program requires a commitment to intense work over 12 weeks to establish a foundation for change. But without it, you risk your marriage, as you struggle to keep living within a secret, secluded and selfish world."
