2014 Range Rover uses supercharger to hold off BMW X3
Land Rover of San Antonio explains mechanical process to customers
SAN ANTONIO, July 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Not many other automakers are able to take on the best of what the competition throws at them as Land Rover and its models like the 2014 Range Rover. For some time now the 2014 Range Rover has been among the top leaders in the luxury SUV class of the automotive industry. But as others have realized that Land Rover vehicles are redefining what it means to be an SUV owner, the rest of the luxury world has began to ramp up their efforts. Among those taking their shot at Land Rover is BMW. In order to help its customers make the most informed decision possible, Land Rover of San Antonio has broken down the differences between the 2014 Range Rover vs. the 2014 BMW X3.

One of the biggest differences between the 2014 Range Rover and the 2014 BMW X3 comes with the way the two manufacturers have chosen to enhance their engines. Both have a 3.0-liter, V-6 under the hood. However, the 2014 Range Rover has chosen to go with a supercharger and the BMW has gone with a turbocharger. At the most basic level, superchargers and turbochargers perform the same function by drawing in more air to the engine to increase horsepower. It is the way those systems are triggered that makes the difference. A turbocharger uses exhaust gasses from the engine to turn the fan blades that bring in the extra air. This makes the engine slightly more fuel-efficient than the supercharger. It also has a lag in activation and doesn't make as much extra power.
The supercharger available on the 2014 Range Rover is directly connected to the engine. This means as soon as the throttle is engaged, the fan blades are turned by a chain or belt thus instantly drawing in more air and making more power. This is what accounts for the 340-horsepower available on the Range Rover that out paces the 300-horsepower made by the same size engine on the BMW X3.
