2014 Komen Detroit Race for the Cure® grants nearly $900,000 to local breast cancer programs and announces 2015 Race date
2014 Komen Detroit Race for the Cure® Celebrates Accomplishments
DETROIT, Sept. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As a result of funds raised in the 2014 Komen Detroit Race for the Cure, locally presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, $896,474 was awarded to three local breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs serving Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. An additional $235,000 went to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program.
The 24th annual Komen Detroit Race will be held on May 16, 2015 at Chene Park with an East Jefferson 5K route.
The announcements were made Sept. 17 at the Komen Detroit Friends and Team Captains Celebration. More than 300 supporters attended the celebration at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.
More than 25,000 participated in the June 7, 2014 Komen Detroit Race, which was held at Detroit's Chene Park this year, a change from the Comerica Park venue, due to the M-1 Rail project.
"Although we moved to a new location, we carried 22 years of tradition with us and kept Komen's mission at the forefront," said Katrina Studvent, co-chair, Komen Detroit Race for the Cure.
"Changing locations is challenging, especially for an event of this size and magnitude. But we think everyone who participated in this year's Race saw that same commitment, passion and support that has always marked this metro Detroit tradition. People walked East Jefferson instead of Woodward, and took part in ceremonies overlooking the Detroit River on a beautiful sunny day. It was magical."
"It was important to keep the Race in the city of Detroit," added Race Chair Maureen Keenan Meldrum. "We embrace the progress happening with the M-1 Rail Project and other exciting things that are underway. Our Komen Detroit Race was a success because of countless people who helped plan, collaborate, fundraise, volunteer and participate in what we call 'one of the best days in the city of Detroit.' That support included 100 generous sponsors and media partners who continue to raise awareness of prevention, early detection and the importance of research. Thanks to our community's commitment, since 1992, we have raised and invested nearly $27 million to help end breast cancer."
The Karmanos Cancer Institute has been the local presenting sponsor of the Komen Detroit Race since its inception in 1992.
Each year, the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure awards 75 percent of the current year's net proceeds to organizations serving Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Funds support breast cancer education, screening and treatment support programs for medically underserved women and men. The remaining 25 percent funds global breast cancer research and project grants awarded through Komen for the Cure.
2014 Komen Detroit-Funded Local Breast Cancer Programs
A panel of community experts invested Race proceeds in the following programs:
- ACCESS: BREAST CANCER OUTREACH PROJECT – Awarded $63,823
Hiam Hamade, MPH, RN, BSN, Arab Community Center for Economic & Social Services
The Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) will continue engaging the low-income Arab American community in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Through the program, women will receive comprehensive one-on-one health education through in-home visits, and women with no previous history of breast cancer screening will receive a free mammogram and clinical breast exam.
- EXTEND AND ENHANCE: PROVIDING BCCCP SERVICES TO MORE WOMEN IN WAYNE COUNTY – Awarded $370,541
Robert Burack, M.D., MPH, Karmanos Cancer Institute and Wayne State University School of Medicine
The Wayne County Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) will continue to provide breast screening, follow-up and treatment at no out-of-pocket cost to uninsured and underinsured women in the metro Detroit region. This grant will provide for more breast screenings, adding to the number of screenings already funded by the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH). The program will also help navigate women to Affordable Care Act (ACA) programs, as well as help cover remaining service gaps.
- HELPING HANDS: BREAST DIAGNOSTIC AND LIMITED TREATMENT SERVICES TO LOW-INCOME/UNINSURED PATIENTS AT THE ALEXANDER J. WALT BREAST CENTER – Awarded $462,110
Laura Zubeck, RN, BSN, MBA/HCA, Karmanos Cancer Institute
The Helping Hands grant will continue to cover diagnostic and limited treatment for uninsured/underinsured women and men who are not eligible for other support. The grant will also cover service gaps for some patients enrolled in the BCCCP. Karmanos staff will evaluate all requests for financial assistance and provide educational materials, system navigation, follow-up guidance and help with other needs, such as transportation and prescriptions, just to name a few.
Recognizing Outstanding Fundraising
The Sept. 17 celebration also recognized outstanding fundraising efforts through the Friends for the Cure® program. The event acknowledges Race teams of 40 or more, teams that raised more than $5,000 and individuals who raised more than $1,000.
Michael Meldrum, volunteer chair of Friends for the Cure® said, "Since this program started 18 years ago, Friends has raised $10.9 million and now accounts for nearly half of the total Komen Detroit Race revenue. Although we are grateful for everyone's contributions, these outstanding fundraisers are the backbone of what Komen is able to do in our community."
Sixty-seven Platinum Club members raised at least $2,000 each. Sixteen Promise Club members raised $5,000 or more. Of the top ten individual fundraisers, the latter seven of this impressive group together raised $51,992.
The top three fundraisers for 2014 are:
- 1st place winner, is Audrey Sim, M.D., of St. Clair Shores, who raised $29,295 this year. In the past nine years, Dr. Sim has raised more than $110,000. She is captain of the team Julie's Angel's, named for her sister Julie Grace Sim who lost her five-year battle with breast cancer in 2005.
- 2nd place winner is Hope Bradford, of Davisburg, who raised $14,602 this year. She is a breast cancer survivor who has raised $54,460 in the past six years. She started the Kelly Services team in 2009 and has been the captain ever since.
- 3rd place winner is Pamela Wyett, of Bloomfield, who raised $11,526 this year. Wyett is a four-year breast cancer survivor, captain of the team Pam's Bosom Buddies and has raised $27,842 in the past three years.
The Susan G. Komen Promise of One Award was given to Donna Stoner of Grosse Pointe; and Laura Zubeck, R.N., of Royal Oak. Stoner and Zubeck co-chair the Survivor/Memorial activities, leading several sub-committees on the Komen Detroit Planning Committee, all of which support education, survivorship and honoring the memory of those we have lost to breast cancer.
Stoner is a breast cancer survivor and a successful realtor who volunteers her leadership and organization skills to engage others. Many of her thoughtful ideas have shaped the look and feel of the survivor and memorial activities at the Detroit Race. Understanding what it's like to get a breast cancer diagnosis, she always makes time to listen and give a hug to those affected by this disease.
Zubeck, a registered nurse, is director of Patient/Community Education and Volunteer Services at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. A long-time volunteer of Komen Detroit, Zubeck is always willing to help. She is also project director of the Komen Detroit grant-funded program Helping Hands. She is known for her sense of humor but, most importantly, for her tireless commitment, compassion and dedication to patients, assuring that they get the help they need.
In addition to the awards celebration, Meghan Malley, a Karmanos Cancer Institute patient who was diagnosed at age 29, shared her inspiring story of living with metastatic disease, thanking the audience for their support and encouraging more funding for breast cancer research.
A panel of Karmanos/Wayne State University breast cancer experts gave an update on breast cancer progress and took questions from the audience.
