2013-2014 Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Award Winners Announced
The awards recognize outstanding journalism demonstrating the essential role of biomedical research in new medical discoveries and scientific breakthroughs
WASHINGTON, June 12, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) announced today the winners of the 13th annual Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards. The awards, named in honor of FBR's late chairman Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, recognize outstanding journalism that highlights the role of biomedical research that includes the humane and responsible use of animal models, cell cultures, and computer modeling in recent medical discoveries and scientific breakthroughs.
"In 2002, FBR established the DeBakey Journalism Awards to strengthen the bridge between the scientific community and the media. Dr. DeBakey believed journalists are a critical filter between scientists and the public, as they have the weighty responsibility of translating complicated scientific jargon into a language the public understands," said FBR president Frankie Trull. "With the DeBakey Awards, we honor journalists who are delivering news about the latest scientific and medical breakthroughs and, in doing so, offer us much hope that new cures are on the horizon."

Kerry Sanders & Erika Angulo, NBC News (Television)
