Shugar comes to the position after having previously served as the director of the convention's Media Center during the 2008 and 2004 Republican National Conventions, as well as in key roles supporting media operations in 2000 and 1996. Shugar began her convention tenure in 1988 working for Convention Manager Bill Phillips when it was held in her hometown.
"Shugar brings valuable experience, both within and apart from conventions, that will be valuable in accommodating the needs of the 15,000 members of the media who will cover the Republican Convention," said Chief Executive Officer William Harris. "I have great confidence in her ability to maximize our convention coverage needs, allowing for the message of our nominee to reach voters from coast to coast."
Shugar has experience working in Republican politics, having served as assistant clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives, in the political division of the Republican National Committee and as a political appointee at the Department of Health and Human Services in the George H. W. Bush administration.
"I am thrilled to be a part of the team that is putting on this year's convention," Shugar said. "It is an honor to be given the responsibility of creating an environment, including workspace access and camera positions, that allows the media to comprehensively cover the 2012 event."
Shugar holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University. She has moved temporarily to the Tampa Bay area for her new role.
