2012 National Teacher of the Year Keynote Speaker at California Retired Teachers Association Convention
SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 15, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Rebecca Mieliwocki, 2012 National Teacher of the Year and a 7th grade English teacher at Luther Burbank Middle School in Burbank, Calif., will share her perspective on the teaching profession during her presentation, Supercharging the Education Profession by Igniting the Power of One.
Her audience will consist of more than 300 retired educators who, though officially retired, still care deeply about the profession and helping California's youth. Many California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA) members regularly see the inside of classrooms by serving as volunteers and mentors. Members volunteer in a variety of areas both related to education and helping their communities. In 2012 CalRTA members reported donating more than 2.5 million hours of volunteer service valued at more than $62 million.
Mieliwocki's presentation will be the closing keynote at the CalRTA annual convention:
When: Noon, Sunday, May 19, 2013
Where: International Ballroom B, Los Angeles Airport Hilton
Mieliwocki was selected in April 2012 as the 62nd National Teacher of the Year by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). A panel of educators, representing 15 national education organizations, chose the finalists from the 2012 state teachers of the year in all 50 states. State teachers of the year are selected on the basis of nominations by students, teachers, principals, and school district administrators throughout the states. Applications are then submitted to CCSSO, where the national selection committee reviews the data on each state candidate and personally interviews each finalist before naming the National Teacher of the Year.
Education is definitely in Mieliwocki's blood. Her parents, Sue and Bill Lipschultz, are both retired educators and will be in the audience during her presentation Sunday.
The California Retired Teachers Association, which was formed in 1929, is the state's leading organization of retired educators, representing nearly 50,000 members. Learn more online at www.calrta.org.
