"Charlotte has been more than a host city for this year's convention, Charlotteans have been our partners from day one," said DNCC CEO Steve Kerrigan. "And DNCC staff wanted to be more than a temporary addition to the city, we wanted to give back and become a true part of the community. We have done that and more and are very proud to announce that we have doubled our service commitment to Charlotte by completing over 4,000 service hours. The 2012 Democratic National Convention is about bringing Americans together to continue building a stronger country, and giving back to Charlotte is part of our contribution to that mission."
Since arriving in Charlotte in June 2011, the DNCC has made service to Charlotte a priority, with staff members volunteering both individually and as a group. Many DNCC staff tutored weekly at Allenbook Elementary, a nearby Title 1 school. During the 2011 holiday season, the staff assembled care packages to send to 500 members of the North Carolina National Guard deployed overseas. The DNCC has also volunteered with last year's local Veterans Day parade and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service; staffed food drives at Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina; worked on landscaping and beautification of Ramblewood Park; and worked with various non-profit organizations throughout the city.
