WASHINGTON, June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) announced today the winners of the 11th annual Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards. The awards, named in honor of FBR's late chairman Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, recognize outstanding journalism that highlights the role of humane animal research in recent medical discoveries and scientific breakthroughs.
"In 2001, FBR established the DeBakey Journalism Awards to honor journalists that help people understand how humane and responsible medical and scientific research with animal models leads to new medicines, therapies and cures that are extending and improving the lives of both people and animals," said FBR president Frankie Trull. "Eleven years later, the DeBakey Journalism Award is recognized as one of the most prestigious prizes in science writing. The Awards are a wonderful opportunity for scientists and the media to converge in celebration of strides made in science and medicine."
The 2011-2012 Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Award winners are Jay Schadler and Jake Whitman (ABC News), Carrie Feibel (KUHF Houston Public Radio), Lois M. Collins (Deseret News), Jane E. Allen and Lana Zak (ABC News), Lee Bowman (Scripps Howard News Service) and Joseph Stromberg (Smithsonian). The judging panel was composed of both members of the media and the scientific community.
