17th Annual Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival set to kick off next week
Elite Racing, Rare Navy Ship Tours, Military Appreciation, Stadium Super Trucks, Street Bike Stuntman, and more to headline annual festival on Naval Air Station North Island
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Next week the Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival will kick-off its 17th year as the premiere auto racing speedway in Southern California. More than 25,000 are expected to attend the highly anticipated event slated for September 20-21, 2014.
Located on the most distinctive race track location in the country—Naval Air Station North Island—the two day festival features fast-paced, exhilarating auto racing, rare exhibitions and pays tribute to the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Advanced event promotions featuring event headliners will take place on September 16 and September 19 (an invitation-only Media Day). Media interested in interviewing headliners prior to the festival should contact Staci Ignell at (858) 333-1558 or [email protected].
Event highlights include:
- Various Race Categories: Dozens of various race cars and roadsters will take to the track—from Sports Racing, Production Cars, Historic NASCAR cars to Historic Trans-AM. There will be no shortage of hotrods racing on this track!
- Appearance by Redbull-sponsored streetbike stuntman Aaron Colton: This pro-athlete will show off his Street Freestyle skills—shown all over the world each year.
- Appearance by the world-renowned Robby Gordon Off-Road Formula SUPER Trucks: Versatile off-road trucks will race and take flight on Sunday, September 21. Producing 600 horsepower, these V8 trucks generate speeds of up to 130 miles per hour and can get up to 20 feet in the air!
- Navy Open House/Rare Ship Tours: As the only Navy open house on the West Coast, the general public will get the rare opportunity to tour the USS Nimitz, the USS Somerset, and the USS Pinckney—as well as other command displays, flyovers, military vehicles and more.
- Military Pit Crew Challenge: Similar to a real pit crew challenge, various military commands will compete against fellow active duty military personnel on both Saturday and Sunday.
Other highlights include garage tours, a car show to benefit the Navy's Morale Welfare Recreation, test-drives by BMW, appearances by military leadership, a drop-in by the U.S. Navy's Leap Frog Parachute Team, and the USO Singing Troupe.
Tickets can be purchased online (www.fleetweeksandiego.org) or at the event. The event is free for active duty military and their direct dependents with ID. Children under 12 are free with adult paid admission.
