11-Year-old Swims Hudson River to Support Friend's Work for Those with Developmental Disabilities
A Friend in "Deed"
NEW YORK, July 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A second miracle will be taking place on the Hudson River on July 31st. Eleven-year-old Aaron Perl and his father, Mitch, plan to swim the Hudson River at an event dubbed "Mitzvah on the Hudson" to benefit people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.
Young Aaron overcame his own physical disability when he was born with a congenital short femur that required a painful leg-lengthening surgery when he was six years old. Today, Aaron competes in triathlons with his father, earning first place out of 188 contestants in a recent triathlon.
The Perls are supporting AHRC Nassau through their longtime friend, Ally Witt, a 13-year-old who adopted AHRC Nassau for her Mitzvah Project. Witt has raised nearly $6,000 to benefit AHRC's respite services and it is a cause close to her heart as her uncle resides in an AHRC Nassau residence.
AHRC Nassau's respite services are vital in that they provide emergency placement, a summer sleep-away camp, Camp Loyaltown, in upstate New York, and a Saturday recreation program.
As more and more adult children continue to be cared for at home by their aging parents and families, respite services are crucial.
The Mitzvah on the Hudson will take place on Sunday, July 31st at 1:00 p.m. at 99th Street and will end at the 79th Boat Basin. A post-swim reception will be held at the Boat Basin Cafe. Sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information on the swim, please visit: www.mitzvahonthehudson.kintera.org
