100+ Asian American Organizations Challenge Discrimination at Yale, Brown & Dartmouth
WASHINGTON, May 19, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Monday May 23, 2016, leaders and representatives of more than 100 Asian American organizations will be holding a press conference in the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. to announce the filing of civil rights violation complaints against Yale University, Brown University and Dartmouth College for their discriminatory admission practices against Asian American applicants.
Historically, Asian Americans have been victimized by many race-based policies such as 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act and various school segregation programs. Shockingly, many universities – including Ivy League universities even today are violating the civil rights of Asian American applicants on a continuous and systematic basis. Since 2006, Asian American students and organizations have filed administrative complaints and lawsuits against Ivy League universities. However, the U.S. Government has done nothing to stop this patently unconstitutional discrimination.
To continue fighting against this unlawful discrimination, the Asian American Coalition for Education (AACE), representing more than 100 Asian American organizations, will file an administrative complaint with the Civil Rights Division, Department of Justice, and Office of Civil Rights, Department of Education on May 23, 2016. In this complaint AACE requests that the Department of Education and the Department of Justice conduct a thorough investigation of admission practices of Yale University, Brown University and Dartmouth College and require the three colleges and other Ivy League universities to cease their discriminatory practices, including the use of racial quotas, racially-differentiated admission standards, racial stereotypes, and other unlawful admissions criteria.
With more than 100 Chinese-, Indian-, Korean-, Pakistani-, Japanese- and other Asian American organizations from all over the nation joining in, this represents the largest joint action ever taken by Asian American communities against Ivy League universities' discrimination.
Planned attendees include Mr. Jian Li, who courageously filed the first individual complaint against Ivy League universities for their discrimination against Asian American applicants.
We cordially invite all journalists and members of the press to this conference, an event about Asian American equal education rights, specially held during Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.
