10 Gbps Ethernet Controller and Adapter Shipments to Cloud Customers Grew about Ten Times Faster than Overall Market in 4Q11
Emulex Maintains Lead in Shipments, Intel and Mellanox Capture the Highest Port Share Gain During the Quarter
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In a newly released report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for information about the telecommunications and networking industries, 10 Gbps Ethernet controller and adapter shipments posted a modest 3 percent sequential g rowth during 4Q11, to about 1.3 M ports, but are forecast to surge in 1Q12, propelled by the launch of Intel's next server platform, named Romley.

"While shipments to traditional server manufacturers declined, 10 Gbps Ethernet ports going onto servers built by Cloud customers continued to blossom during the quarter," said Sameh Boujelbene, Analyst covering Controllers and Adapters at Dell'Oro Group. "Mellanox more than doubled its adapter shipments, driven mainly by one large Cloud customer. Meanwhile, Intel enjoyed a blow out growth in its LOM shipments to the stand-alone servers of its Cloud customers," added Boujelbene.
The Controller and Adapter report shows share shifts among Broadcom, Cisco, Emulex, Intel, Mellanox and QLogic. The report also tracks 10 Gbps migration onto stand-alone vs. blade servers and gives details about Fibre Channel over Ethernet enabled ports as well as 10G Base-T shipments.
