"2012 started out strong as server manufacturers bought heaps of 10 Gbps controllers and adapters. By fourth quarter, overall market shipment levels contracted as server manufacturers worked down inventory," said Sameh Boujelbene, Senior Analyst covering the Controller and Adapter market at Dell'Oro Group. "End users have been disappointingly slow to adopt 10 Gbps server connectivity largely because the price has not been compelling. In early 2013 we expect this to change as a new generation of lower-priced 10 Gbps switches will come to market," added Ms. Boujelbene.
The Controller and Adapter report shows the 4Q12 results was accompanied with unprecedented share shifts among Broadcom, Cisco, Emulex and Mellanox. For the first time, Intel leads in shipments, followed by Mellanox which jumped up from the eighth position.
The report also highlights the differences in 10 Gbps migration on blade vs. stand-alone servers as well as the progress of 10G Base-T, Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), and InfiniBand.
