NEW YORK, March 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The French Bulldog continues to hold Chicago's top spot in the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2020 ranking of the most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in the U.S.

The French Bulldog was also recognized as the #1 pup in New York City, Atlanta, and Dallas.

Compared to its 2019 rankings, the windy city continues to remain loyal to the same top five breeds. But there seems to be some shifting occurring within the top 10 most popular breeds. The Bernese Mountain Dog secured 10th place last year, but dropped to the 21st spot, and was replaced by the Dachshund this year.  

"The loveable Frenchie took Chicago's top spot again, but I think a top contender to look at is the Boston Terrier." said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo.  "This non-sporting breed was in 12th place last year, but this year it came in as the 9th most popular breed, giving it some potential to move up in the ranks."

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today at the AKC Museum of the Dog in NYC. The Labrador Retriever celebrates a milestone!  The loveable Lab remains the number one most popular breed in the United States for the 30th year.

While the Lab holds firmly to the top spot, the French Bulldog has continued to skyrocket in popularity. The Frenchie landed at number two in 2020, knocking the German Shepherd Dog down to third. The German Shepherd Dog had been the second most popular dog breed since 2009.
