Zogby Analytics was commissioned by The O'Leary Report to conduct an online survey of 890 likely voters in the US. All interviews were completed between, January 16, 2015 through January 18, 2015. Based on a confidence interval of 95%, the margin of error for 890 is +/- 3.4 percentage points. This nation-wide public opinion survey was released on January 27, 2015.
"Americans seem to be unaware of Hillary Clinton's age and are opposed to a candidate in their 70's becoming the nominee of the Democratic Party," said Bradley S. O'Leary, president of The O'Leary Report and author of The United States Citizens' Handbook.
QUESTION: "If Hillary Clinton is elected president, she will be 70 years old within her first year of office. Do you Agree or Disagree the Democrats should consider a younger candidate for President?"
Responses to this question showed that a majority of Americans believe that if Hillary Clinton runs for president, that Democrats should consider a younger candidate.
- 48% of men and 45% of women support this belief
- Independents support this belief by a factor of 45% to 35%.
- Democrats: 35% believe this is true vs. 45% who do not believe this is true and support Hillary Clinton's candidacy
- Youth ages 18-29, a population that should be a key component of a campaign, also share this belief that Democrats need to offer younger candidates by a factor of 49% to 27%
- Respondents over the age of 65 believe this by a factor 50% to 31%
This Hillary Clinton/age question was sourced from a MSNBC story dated 12/16/14. The story was built around a Pew Research Center poll taken in 2014 that showed that 70% of young voters between the ages of 18-29 believed Hillary Clinton to be younger than 59. An 16% thought she was younger than 50. The Pew poll also showed that 40% of voters thought she was 59 years of age or younger.
"Although Republicans are used to older nominees, Democrats are not. Thus, their appeal to younger voters and a candidate like Barak Obama," said O'Leary.
QUESTION: "If a national pollster asked you if you owned a firearm, would you determine to tell him or her the truth or would you feel it was none of their business?"
Gallup recently released a poll showing that gun ownership had declined from polls they had taken in an earlier time period. That number is inconsistent with the number of firearms that have been sold since President Obama took residency, but the difference can be answered by the Zogby Analytic question above. The poll indicates maintaining anonymity is a contributing factor:
- 36% of Americans feel it is none of the pollster's business and that includes 35% of current gun owners 47% of Republicans and 42% of Independents
QUESTION: "US Congressional approval of the Keystone Pipeline would theoretically continue to put economic and military pressure on countries like Russia, Iran, and Venezuela who cannot compete with the low prices of Saudi Arabian oil and US shale-based oil. Do you agree or disagree that the Keystone Pipeline should be approved by the US Congress so that we can continue to put pressure economically and militarily on countries such as Russia, Iran and Venezuela?"
A majority of American's supported this effort, 21% opposed it:
- 52% of Americans believe the Keystone pipeline should be passed as a means of economic warfare against countries such as Iran, Russia and Venezuela.
QUESTION: "Do you agree or disagree that the United States should help certain Arab countries financially and militarily if their countries' constitutions or laws make being a Christian or Atheist a crime punishable by jail or even execution?"
A majority of Americans regardless of political affiliation opposed this:
- 63% of Americans think that we should not help Arab countries.
- 17% of Americans think we should
- Democrats are opposed to helping Arab countries that 51% to 22%
- Republicans are opposed 69% to15%
- Independents are opposed 69% to 11%
- Americans older than 65 years old agree 80% to 4%
"As the campaign year begins we hope that others will ask these same questions", said O'Leary
