Yoigo Selects Tellabs for 3G Mobile Backhaul in Spain
Tellabs 8600 system supports ambitious growth plans for Yoigo
HIGH WYCOMBE, UK, July 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Spanish mobile operator Yoigo is expanding and increasing the capacity of its 3G network. The operator aims to triple its customers and gain 10% of the Spanish market by 2015. Yoigo selected the Tellabs® 8600 Managed Edge System to support its growth and manage the anticipated increase in data traffic.
Managing the evolution to all-IP
The nationwide expansion of Yoigo's mobile backhaul network – managed by Ericsson Spain – will consist of over 100 Radio Access Network (RAN) nodes. Ericsson will implement the Tellabs® 8630 Access Switch and Tellabs® 8660 Edge Switch network elements to aggregate 3G traffic, enabling Yoigo to evolve to an all-IP network and at the same time maintain support for legacy traffic.
Yoigo will also deploy the Tellabs® 8000 Intelligent Network Manager. Tellabs' cost-effective, flexible network manager enables Yoigo to provision mobile services faster and more easily. Yoigo expects to complete the deployment by 2012.
Cost-effective deployments supporting growth
"Our aggressive growth strategy is built on offering our customers a high quality of service at competitive prices," said Bricio Valera, Network Rollout Director at Yoigo. "With the Tellabs 8600 system, we can invest in the expansion of our network and still offer our customers competitive pricing."
"The Tellabs 8600 mobile backhaul system is perfectly suited to operators planning for significant growth – both in subscribers and in data traffic," said Tarcisio Ribeiro, vice president, Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Operators can see the growth in data traffic coming, and they need to prepare for it by upgrading to IP infrastructure. With our system, they can do so cost-effectively and launch new data services."
Yoigo is 76.6% owned by TeliaSonera, the leading telecoms operator in the Nordic and Baltic region. Yoigo currently has approximately 2.5 million subscribers.
Yoigo joins more than 160 customers who are using the Tellabs 8600 system for mobile backhaul around the world. This agreement is the latest success for the Tellabs 8600 mobile backhaul portfolio. As mobile data usage continues to surge, operators in high growth markets around the world are investing in upgrading to all-IP backhaul infrastructure. In 2011, Tellabs has announced major mobile backhaul deployments with the two of the largest operators in Russia – MTS and Megafon.
