BROOKLYN, N.Y., May 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Thousands of the world's most hardcore athletes will descend upon Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada the weekend of November 15th & 16th, 2014 to participate in World's Toughest Mudder, the 24-hour extreme obstacle course challenge designed to be the ultimate test of strength, stamina and mental grit.
Competitors will have 24 hours to log as many miles as they can on the five-mile circuit course, which will include more than 20 bone-punishing obstacles. The man and woman with the greatest number of full laps will each take home $10,000; past winners have completed more than 100 grueling miles. The top 4-person team will also earn a $12,000 prize, with a total prize purse of $60,000 up for grabs.
The 2014 World's Toughest Mudder will mark the first time in the event's four-year history that it will be held in the Las Vegas area. "We are thrilled to be hosting World's Toughest Mudder at Lake Las Vegas," said Nolan Kombol, Director of Event Innovation. "With hundreds of acres of rolling desert landscape running alongside a massive freshwater lake, the raw terrain will allow us to build our most challenging course ever."
World's Toughest Mudder is the culminating event of the Tough Mudder calendar, and is an amped-up version of "Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet" – typically an untimed 10-12 mile challenge. This year's World's Toughest Mudder will feature toughened-up versions of classic Tough Mudder obstacles, as well as obstacles entirely exclusive to the year-end event and the debut of new obstacles that will be on Tough Mudder courses in 2015.
The event will be held just 30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, and expects to host competitors from more than 20 countries from around the world. Last year, more than 25% of all participants were internationally based, with contenders traveling from 14 countries to compete. The winners of the men's and women's first place prizes both hailed from outside the US – from Canada and Australia, respectively.
Designed by British Special Forces, Tough Mudder events feature military-style obstacles such as "Funky Monkey," greased-up incline and decline monkey bars; "Everest," a run up a slicked-up quarter-pipe; and "Electroshock Therapy," a gauntlet of 10,000-volt-charged dangling wires participants must barrel through to get to the finish line.
Tough Mudder is the largest supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and its mission to assist severely injured veterans. To date, Tough Mudder participants have raised more than $6.5 million for Wounded Warrior Project.
Registration for World's Toughest Mudder is now open to all those brave enough to take on the challenge. Those who wish to support a competitor can sign up as a "pit crew" member, gaining special access to the competitor refueling area and real-time updates on standings. Standard spectator entry is free to all. For more information, visit www.toughmudder.com.
