Women's Reproductive Rights Advocacy Group, My Body My Business, Launches Educational Campaign to Ensure Every "Slut" Votes -- Hear That, Mr. Limbaugh?
SAN DIEGO, June 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Anyone that has paid attention to the news in recent months, is aware of Rush Limbaugh's bold statement that implies even virgins can be sluts – all one has to do is ask for birth control. Thankfully some good has come of his offensive and ridiculous statement. My Body. My Business.™, a nonpartisan women's reproductive health rights advocacy group, has launched their first national campaign, This Slut Votes! ™ to ensure every woman is aware of legislation affecting birth control access and help them to take action. In addition, founder, Jenna Soard, will undertake a social experiment by branding herself as a "slut" for 30-days and recording her personal experience and public reaction via social media channels.
"In 2011, 26 states enacted one or more anti-choice measures, which is twice as many as in 2010, there have been over 915 measures introduced in 2012" said Jenna Soard, My Body My Business founder. "Although the word "slut" is considered one of the most offensive, derogatory names, we are using the term to prove a point. If this is how women needing care are being defined, we want those who believe this and want to take away our autonomy to know this "slut" votes and she will be heard at all levels of government."
To help inspire women to get involved, Soard is conducting a social experiment where she promises to wear her "This Slut Votes" T-shirt every day for 30 days. From there, she will record the public's feedback, reaction and her own personal thoughts and struggles with being branded a slut for a month. Her journey will be documented via a blog on http://www.thisslutvotes.com.
The This Slut Votes! ™ campaign uses its website, newsletters and social media channels to share relevant statistics, local and national legislation affecting reproductive rights, personal anecdotes of those affected, voting information, provides volunteers to likeminded organizations, and notifies members about events such as Slut Walks, rallies, and protests.
It also encourages action by enlisting women in their army to lead local initiatives and creates leaders by offering a free comprehensive, How-To Guide on Becoming an Activist for Women's Reproductive Rights, comprised of a 20 page PDF of everything from the Limbaugh situation, the recent history of legislation and step by step instructions on how to become an activist. Soard is encouraging other women to follow in her footsteps, by branding themselves as "sluts" for a week and document their personal experiences with talking to strangers about anti-women legislation and volunteering for already established non-profits.
My Body. My Business.™ was launched in early 2012 by unlikely hero, Jenna Soard. She is not a politician, attorney, feminist, or even an activist... until now. She was the average woman who paid little attention to women's rights issues because a) she was generally uninformed and b) she couldn't decode all of the complicated legalese used to describe the current issues. Jenna Soard found her voice the moment Rush Limbaugh used the word slut.
"Like most people, I didn't pay much attention to the issues at hand until I realized these laws could affect me," said Soard. "And the laws are so invasive, they could be even prevent me from having access to contraception. – I just didn't know how bad it really was until I researched the legislation. I have since made it my personal mission to reach the millions of women out there just like me who would want to be in the know before it is too late. It is so much more than the age old pro life vs. pro choice. These are laws that infringe on the privacy between a woman and doctor, and individuals pushing their religious and personal beliefs on others to limit their choices."
Soard is the brand developer, marketing strategist, web and graphic designer for all marketing materials and promotional items, social media facilitator, and the official spokeswoman. She is also a teacher of debate and ethics – the perfect person to disseminate information in a way that is unbiased and inspires conversation that can lead an individual to make an informed decision.
