NORTHFIELD, Ill., Sept. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Stanley J. Robboy, MD, FCAP, of Durham, North Carolina, was named the 2014 Pathologist of the Year by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Dr. Robboy was honored at the CAP annual conference, CAP'14—THE Pathologists Meeting™, taking place today through Sept. 10 in Chicago.
Dr. Robboy received the award, the CAP's highest honor, for his leadership and significant contributions to patient care through his more than 40 years of service to the CAP, serving as the College's 32nd president and as chair, vice chair, and member of numerous project teams, committees, and councils.
"It is an honor to recognize Dr. Stanley Robboy with the CAP Pathologist of the Year award for commitment to advancing the specialty and to improving patient care," said CAP President Gene N. Herbek, MD, FCAP. "As a noted expert in women's health issues, Dr. Robboy's contributions have resulted in more accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatments, helping women to live healthier lives."
As a professor and the vice chairman in the Department of Pathology and a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, Dr. Robboy has devoted much of his career to advancing accuracy in women's health. He pioneered unraveling of the story of DES (diethylstilbestrol), a drug administered during the 1940s and 1950s to women with high-risk pregnancy; a small percentage of the exposed daughters developed vaginal cancer several decades later. Dr. Robboy was the senior author and now editor emeritus of the noted pathology textbook, Robboy's Pathology of the Female Reproductive Tract.
"There's no better way to care for patients than through the understanding of disease and the discovery of better ways to decipher the underlying etiology. It's this understanding that leads to better diagnoses and treatments for patients," said Dr. Robboy.
After his training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Dr. Robboy went on to become an attending pathologist there and also associate professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Robboy is a well-known lecturer in gynecologic pathology.
Role of the Pathologist
