CHATSWORTH, Calif., Sept. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The conventional idea of sexiness has been turned on its head... literally. A new survey for Sexy Hair by Wakefield Research reveals that most women aren't styling their hair based on the general perception of what is sexy. Instead, these trendsetters are going against the grain and rocking styles that redefine their own version of the word.

While Kim Kardashian and Sofia Vergara have lust-worthy locks that women would traditionally do anything for, the 'do is still of utmost importance in first encounters and social gatherings; women are now treating their hair as a personal, individual fashion accessory to showcase their unique sense of style. Most women (89%) think wearing hair down is the sexiest style, but on the first date, more than half (51%) have worn their hair up. And the intriguing thinking continues:
- Nearly two in five (37%) women have pulled their hair back into a ponytail for a date, even though it's only seen as a "sexy style" by four percent of women
- 16 percent of women have worn a bun on a date, even though only two percent consider it to be the sexiest style
- Braid bars are all the rage right now, yet only one percent of women think a side braid is "sexy"
Given the independent interpretations of sexiness, women are basking in the glow of their own hair hotness more than high fashion or cool accessories. The survey found that women rely on a sexy hair day to give them confidence (42%), more so than a sexy outfit (39%), a fresh manicure (12%), and new shoes (7%). And get this: more than five in six short-haired women (83%) do not even leave the house without making sure their hair looks good, especially when great hair is needed to make a lasting first impression.
Whether it's a job interview (46%), meeting new friends (22%) or going on that first date (21%), women say having a head-turning style can make or break their day. In fact, 77 percent of women say they don't feel like themselves if they are having anything less than a stellar hair day.
"When women are feeling good about themselves, that confidence pours over into every part of their day," said Sexy Hair Artistic Creative Director, Rafe Hardy. "We want women to feel comfortable in the hair they were born with, but empowered to experiment with new styles and looks through the use of Sexy Hair's versatile product lines."
And even though women are bucking tradition, they still want to look sexy during close encounters: 41 percent of women have admitted to getting out of bed before their honey to ensure that their hair looks good. To quickly freshen up slept-in hair as you tiptoe to the mirror, Hardy recommends applying a little dry shampoo at the roots, like Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Dry Shampoo, which not only absorbs oil but also provides body and volume to limp locks.
Hardy also says practice new styles on the weekends or for work. The comfortable environment will make it easier to try new styles, and the compliments from coworkers will give the confidence needed to pull it off again for that ten-year reunion.
Other tips from Hardy include:
- Add some pizzazz to your pony by wearing a sparkly headband for a bit of glam, or go bohemian with a front braid pulled into a ponytail. Finish off the style with Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play for a weather-proof (and date-proof) hold
- Give your bun a bit of old Hollywood sophistication with a high sock bun and tear-drop earrings. Finish the look with a bright lipstick and quick coat of Big Sexy Hair Big Shine spray for a weightless final gloss
- Braids are so versatile, so mix it up! Prep hair with Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal, and then play with front, side and waterfall braids to give your hair a variety of looks

Methodological Notes
The Sexy Hair Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) among 1,016 nationally representative women, ages 18 and older, between June 8th and June 14th, 2012, using an email invitation and an online survey. Quotas have been set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the U.S. population of women 18 and older.
Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
