WIRB-Copernicus Group Partners With MD Buyline to Host Ebola Preparedness Webinar
Session will discuss best practices regarding personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies and provide comparative pricing information
PRINCETON, N.J., Nov. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- WIRB-Copernicus Group (WCG), the world's largest provider of regulatory and ethical review services and software to support clinical research, announced today that its WCG Biosafetyc™ division is partnering with MD Buyline to present an "Ebola Preparedness Webinar" from 3-4 p.m. ET on Nov. 20. MD Buyline is the market-leading provider of sophisticated healthcare analytics and supply chain spend intelligence capabilities to healthcare providers and vendors.
The recent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak has underscored the importance of healthcare workers having the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) and also receiving appropriate training on how to use it. As a result, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emory University have issued new guidelines to minimize the risk of viral exposure and infection among healthcare workers treating EVD patients.
"While having the right PPE is critical, it is also essential that healthcare workers are trained on its safe and correct use: donning and doffing equipment in the right order when caring for EVD patients," said Lindsay McNair, MD, MPH, MSB, chief medical officer and president of consulting services at WCG. "Proper training will result in fewer occupational exposures and enable healthcare workers to respond to EVD and other infectious disease cases with greater proficiency, increased confidence, and less personal risk."
WCG Biosafety provides on-site EVD Preparedness Training, which covers use of both the Emory-recommended high-level PPE, and the more traditional "step-down" PPE involving gloves, scrubs and respiratory protection. Best practices for handling soiled materials are also included.
MD Buyline has created an Ebola Preparedness Kit which contains all the PPE and cleaning supplies listed in Appendix 3 of the "Emory Healthcare Ebola Preparedness Protocols" document, together with pertinent vendors, item numbers, and price ranges from its extensive, evidence-based pricing database. WCG Biosafety has provided commentary on the kit's product recommendations.
WCG Biosafety trainers include Jonathan Richmond, PhD, RBP, the former director of the Office of Health and Safety for the CDC and chief of safety operations for the Occupational Health and Safety Branch at the National Institutes of Health; Robert Hawley, PhD, RBP, CBSP, the former chief of the Safety and Radiation Protection Division at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease, and the command biosafety officer for the US Army Medical Research and Material Command; and Robert Heckert, BSc, DVM, PhD, CBSP, creator of the CDC/US Department of Agriculture (USDA) training module on biosafety (the checklists used today by USDA field inspectors), and lead consultant to the US Department of State Biosecurity Engagement Program.
The webinar presentations will be given by Ryan Burnette, Ph.D., vice president of WCG Biosafety, and Brandi Crow, BSN, RN, a clinical analyst at MD Buyline. They will describe safety and training considerations related to PPE and cleaning supplies; provide pricing and clinical insight on PPE and ancillary equipment for the laboratory and nursing setting; and outline best practices for negotiating with vendors and avoiding price hiking.
The webinar will last approximately one hour and is complimentary for those who wish to attend.
