When Your Credit Card's Travel Insurance Isn't Enough, says Squaremouth
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., June 29, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Some credit cards offer travel insurance to their customers, but depending on a traveler's needs, that coverage may not be enough. Leading travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, explains three things travelers should consider when relying on their credit card's insurance.
Limited Coverage for Trip Cancellation
Many credit cards offer Trip Cancellation coverage to customers who pay for trips through their card, reimbursing travelers who are unable to take their trip as planned. However, these cards typically limit coverage to a specific amount, with the most generous cards covering up to $10,000 per trip.
Travelers who need more coverage can compare and buy a policy from a third-party insurance provider, like those available on squaremouth.com. These policies can reimburse all prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses, such as airfare, hotels, and tours.
No Option to Cancel For Any Reason
Many travelers want the flexibility to cancel without needing approval from a credit card or travel insurance company. Unfortunately, the standard Trip Cancellation benefit only reimburses travelers who cancel for specific reasons, such as illness, death, severe weather, or terrorism.
For travelers looking for the broadest coverage, some third-party policies offer Cancel For Any Reason to partially reimburse them to cancel for reasons that are not covered by the standard Trip Cancellation benefit.
Medical is Typically Not Included
Most credit cards do not have coverage to treat medical emergencies during a trip. There are some exceptions, but they offer low amounts of medical coverage.
Squaremouth recommends $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage and $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage for international travel, and higher amounts for cruises or remote travel. To get complete coverage for the lowest possible price, travelers can stack a third-party policy on top of their credit card's built-in insurance.
