When The "Best" College Isn't The "Right" College: National Guide Releases 2018-19 Colleges of Distinction List
Colleges of Distinction upends traditional rankings; details schools with innovative teaching and student experiences that lead to academic and career success
AUSTIN, Texas, July 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Longtime champion of a post-rankings approach to connecting students with colleges that deliver the richest student experiences, Colleges of Distinction (CoD) releases its 2018-19 list of colleges today.
Recent polls show that students are relying less on college rankings, which are tainted by inaccurate data and hollow prestige metrics. Instead of ranking mythical "best" colleges to draw clicks, CoD provides students, parents, and counselors with resources to find the right colleges—institutions uniquely suited to their academic, career, and financial needs.
"Colleges aren't commodities; they're as diverse as the needs of today's students," says Tyson Schritter, CoD's chief operating officer. "No single ranking can account for what's most important to every individual student who applies to college in a given year."
CoD profiles nearly 400 universities and colleges that implement High-Impact Practices, are centered on long-term student satisfaction and success, and align with the Four Distinctions (Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Communities, Successful Outcomes). The CoD staff complete campus visits and conduct in-depth interviews with college executives, program directors, faculty, students, and others to see how the schools provide world-class student experiences.
CoD's methodology pulls from research conducted by the Pew Charitable Trust, the Association of American Colleges & Universities, the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, and other organizations. Quality is informed by how certain practices are tied to student success and engagement, sustained employment in an unstable job market, and lifelong learning for students from different socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.
"The Colleges of Distinction College Guide presents institutions of higher learning that have distinguished themselves in several areas that are more important to student success and satisfaction than the well-publicized rankings," says Deborah Blanchard, VP of Communications and Marketing, Christian Brothers University.
