Only regionally accredited colleges and universities with nonprofit status are considered for the "Students before Profits Award." Awards are granted to qualifying schools with online degree programs in the relevant discipline offered at a lower than average tuition rate. The award was conceived, in part, as a way to counteract the negative stereotypes of online education fostered by the bad behavior and poor outcomes of the some of the large, for-profit companies that tend to dominate the online education world. The hope is to shine more light on the growing number of established, reputable, nonprofit schools now offering online degree options.
"Earning a master's degree in psychology or a closely related field is a particularly wise choice for individuals who desire to have a working career in therapy or counseling (rather than in research). These individuals can easily forego the time and money investment of a doctoral program without any injury to their future professional success," said Liz Robertson, lead editor for the ranking of online master's in psychology and counseling award winners. "The abundance of high-quality, low-residency programs from accredited, renowned schools makes it possible for busy adults to take careers in psychology to the next level. Our hope is that this ranking of award-winning programs will help prospective students discover these programs more easily and avoid some of the poor-quality, for-profit options that often dominate in the media through big money marketing schemes."
