Periodically websites need a redesign for one of many reasons such as re-launching a brand, to improve the user experience, or to incorporate innovative technology. While changes are necessary that does create a certain degree of risk on the SEO side of the equation that during the process something might go amiss. Even small issues can create a ripple effect with search engines that could cost you rankings, authority, or even incur penalties. Today NY based web design company, Lounge Lizard, talks about the Top 5 Web Design Mistakes that kill your SEO.
- Forgetting proper redirect rules. There are some very basic redirect rules that always need to be followed on a redesign. Pages that are changed or moved need to use 301 redirects from the old page to the new one to ensure page ranking is maintained or people who use bookmarks can get back to the page. If you delete unneeded pages you lose any SEO value from inbound links. Instead they need to be redirected to the most relevant existing page.
- Skipping a full crawl after migration. Migration typically occurs twice during the redesign process; once when you transfer the live site to your development environment and a second time when you move it back to the live server. It is important to perform a full crawl after each migration to look for links pointing to the wrong pages, images, and the like. Otherwise if errors go unchecked it can cause a ripple effect of problems.
- Not performing a full function check. Once your redesigned site goes live it is critical to perform a full function check on every aspect of the site. You can't just check out a few pages and assume if they look good that everything is working. Remember what they say about assuming? Instead make sure everything functions correctly from ads to search to tools along with checking that your analytics and webmaster tools are all working properly.
- Forgetting to reconfigure WordPress. If your site uses WordPress, then you must take the time to check WordPress and any plugins you might use to make sure search engines are viewing everything properly versus showing as not to crawl or index after the site goes live.
- Changing things on well ranking pages. Occasionally during a redesign, certain elements are changed on pages that rank well in an effort to make improvements. For example, a novice designer might change out images using larger or more impressive images, but during that process they forget to change the image name to match the prior name which helped the page rank. Or copy is broken up differently. Or links on that page are changed. Pages that already rank well need to be handled carefully so that determining factors a search engine uses for page rankings aren't changed.
