According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), Halloween spending this year is estimated to reach $6.9 billion with consumers spending $330 million on pet costumes alone. To meet demand, online retailer Wayfair.com has extended its offering to include more than 300 dog costumes and Halloween accessories to help pet owners primp their pups for costume parties and trick-or-treating.
An estimated 60 percent of people are using social media and internet searches to choose Halloween costumes this year, according to the NRF. Pinterest activity for Halloween costume-related pins is anticipated to increase by seven percent over last year. In September alone, Wayfair.com's dog costume-themed Pinterest board was re-pinned hundreds of times, a clear sign that pet owners are not only thinking about this holiday well in advance, but they are also turning to social media for costume ideas. A witch, a lobster and a Star Wars Ewok were the most re-pinned costumes on the Wayfair.com pet costume board.
Current events also offer pet owners a wide range of costume inspiration for their furry friends. Demand for royal dog costumes, for example, has increased at Wayfair.com as a likely response to the birth of the royal baby in the UK this summer. Costumes including king, queen, prince and princess will undoubtedly be the most popular this year.
Based on recent sales, consumer browsing habits and social media behavior of Wayfair.com customers, dog costumes featuring characters from both old classic Hollywood films and recent box office hits are popular this year. Trick-or-treaters should expect to see pets dressed as Yoda from Star Wars alongside Minions from Despicable Me and the Green Lantern superhero this year.
