CHICAGO, Feb. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 48 million Americans struggle with hunger each year, yet many people do not realize the pervasive impact food insecurity has on our country. Feeding America®, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization, has created an interactive tool to help demonstrate the experiences encountered by many people who face hunger. The scroll-based tool, Facts and Faces of Hunger in America, features walk-cycle character animation and is designed to help users understand the complex facts and insights found in the charity's latest Hunger in America research study. The web experience was designed by creative agency Nice and Serious®.
"The Feeding America network provides meals to more than 46 million men, women, children and seniors in all 50 states. On the ground, we see the faces of families and communities affected by food insecurity, yet hunger continues to be one of the most misunderstood social and economic issues in our country," said Emily Engelhard, Managing Director of Research and Evaluation at Feeding America. "We hope that personalizing our research findings will provide a more consumable way for the public to understand the hardships faced by the people we serve – and the need for us all to work together to solve this issue."
Facts and Faces of Hunger in America follows a day in the life of four characters facing hunger: Jessica, Alicia, Martin and Harold. Each character represents actual experiences faced by people who turn to the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks for support. The charity hopes the interactive tool will help educate and inspire the public to join them in the fight to end hunger in America.
"Hunger in America is a huge issue and one that's too often overlooked. The team at Nice and Serious partnered with Feeding America to create an interactive website that reached new and existing audiences in a different way," said Tom Tapper, creative director at Nice and Serious. "Based on true stories, we designed four illustrated characters. As users scroll through the website, each character walks through a different scene, revealing statistics and stories that show the extent of the problem and highlight the life-changing work that Feeding America does. We hope that this tactile web experience will encourage users to really explore and engage with the issues."
The Facts and Faces of Hunger in America website uses cutting edge scrolling technology to help shape the narrative of the four characters' experiences with hunger. The website is fully responsive on all devices and web browsers, allowing visitors on mobile or tablet devices to learn about Jessica, Alicia, Martin and Harold's circumstances, data about the impact of hunger and the work carried out by Feeding America food banks.
Hunger in America is Feeding America's quadrennial study about the people served in the network of 200 food banks. The comprehensive study is compiled from more than 60,000 interviews with network pantry and meal program recipients around the country. Feeding America hopes Facts and Faces of Hunger in America will inspire website visitors to join the fight to end hunger and share the storytelling tool with others.
