BEDFORD, Mass., Nov. 11, 2015 /PR Newswire/ -- VoltDB is enabling real-world Smart Energy deployments and partnering with industry leaders to accelerate the adoption of Smart Energy solutions.
VoltDB is providing the fast data engine to support Smart Meter deployments in the Hokkaido and Shikoku provinces in Japan through a partnership with Mitsubishi Electric. In addition, VoltDB is part of an upcoming national Smart Energy deployment in Europe through a partnership with CGI, one of the world's largest independent information technology and business process services firms.
Fast Data Smart Energy Implementation and Mitsubishi Electric Partnership
Two provinces in Japan are using VoltDB to enable high-velocity data ingestion, swift analytics and rapid decision-making for more than six million Smart Meters. The utilities are leveraging the speed and real-time analytics of VoltDB to add context and intelligence to meter utilization data as it arrives, and automatically implementing actions to drive down energy consumption. This implementation has been enabled by a partnership between VoltDB and Mitsubishi Electric, which led the deployment.
"Smart Meters allow utilities to capture energy consumption in real-time, but traditional database systems are too slow to ingest metering data, analyze it rapidly, and enable real-time decisions," stated Hiroyuki Okamura, Manager, New Solution Systems, Information Systems & Network at Mitsubishi Electric. "We selected VoltDB because we needed a transactional database architected to handle fast data speeds and volume while delivering real-time analytics."
Planned 50+ Million Smart Meter Deployment
VoltDB was selected by CGI to power a massive smart metering solution project, which will enable a national network of European electric and gas providers to cut costs, manage authorization issues, monitor compliance and improve energy efficiency in both residential and commercial applications.
CGI needed a high-throughput database that could process a large volume of continuous messages sent by a national network of energy suppliers to retrieve information from more than 50 million Smart Meters. VoltDB was selected to provide an in-memory platform that delivers fast access to data upon each request, as well as to provide an operational data store to track and monitor information passed through the system.
Enabling Smart Energy Today
Utilities benefit from VoltDB's fast, in-memory database, which can process millions of incoming events per second and enable real-time decisions and streaming analytics. VoltDB is a leading solution for utilities that need to harness streaming data from Smart Meters to enable applications that optimize energy efficiency.
"Smart Energy requires the ability to process real-time data from Smart Meters and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices to provide greater visibility, transparency, and control over the generation, delivery and use of power," said Eric Sansonetti, Vice President, Business Partnerships for VoltDB. "VoltDB has the fast data, in-memory database capabilities to support the massive real-time data streams that power the utility industry. With real-world experience and partnerships in place with two of the largest players in the Smart Energy market, VoltDB is helping to accelerate the global adoption of Smart Energy solutions."
