Virginia Hospital Center Named One Of America's 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals - Again
Award Winning Hospital Recognized Nationally for Excellence in Cardiovascular Services and Care by Truven Health Analytics®
ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For the second year in a row, Virginia Hospital Center, a leading healthcare facility in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, has been named one of America's 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics®. Virginia Hospital Center is the only hospital in the Washington, DC metropolitan region and the state of Virginia to be recognized with this honor.
"We are proud, once again, of our Hospital's dedicated physicians and staff who earned this honor on behalf of the community we are privileged to serve," said James B. Cole, President and CEO at Virginia Hospital Center. "Being recognized as both one of America's 100 Top Hospitals and a 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital – for two years in a row – is remarkable and proof of our mission 'To Be the Best Hospital'."
The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals® study evaluates performance in key areas: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care), percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost. The study, it its sixteenth year, has been conducted annually since 1999.
The study and subsequent analysis of the positive variances these leading cardio service hospitals show indicate an opportunity for a broader national impact for the cardiovascular patient, should these results be replicated. In fact, if all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of this year's winners:
- Nearly 9,500 additional lives could be saved
- More than $1 billion could be saved
- More than 3,000 additional bypass and angioplasty patients could be complication free
