VENTURA, Calif., Feb. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees voted 4-1 on Tuesday to extend interim Chancellor Bernard Luskin's contract until February 1, 2017, with an option to extend until June 30, 2017. The District's upcoming accreditation review, Luskin's many years of experience as a CEO and extensive accreditation and college leadership weighed heavily on the board's decision. Luskin has served as president and CEO of eight colleges and universities, Chair of the Board and COO of the American Association of Community Colleges in Washington, D.C., as well as serving on the Accrediting Commission for Collegiate Schools of Business. Luskin has successfully led five colleges through the accreditation process.
"In the short period of time that I've been here, I've seen many people come and go," said Larry Kennedy, Board Chair. "This is not a time to change leadership, again. This is a crucial time in the District and we need ability and stability."
In addition to the extended term, the Board acted to increase Luskin's salary from $225,000 to $235,500 annually. While increased, it remains below the average salary of multi-college district Chancellors statewide.
"It is not likely that we will be able to find and hire another Chancellor with the experience of Luskin for the salary that we are proposing," said Bernardo Perez, Vice Chair. "We are in a unique position to be able to capitalize on his expansive knowledge and resources to move the District forward."
Taxpayers in favor of the contract extension also made public comments and urged the District to support the Board's decision and the best interest of the entire District.
