U.S. Medical Management Delivers $3.6 Million in Savings for the Pioneer ACO Program
TROY, Mich., Nov. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Medical Management and its affiliates (USMM) announced today that they generated over $3.6 million in savings for the Pioneer ACO program in Performance Year 2. The $3.6 million represents 3.75% of the total savings achieved under the entire Pioneer ACO program nationally.
USMM is the nation's leading provider of in-home medical services which include primary care, laboratory, diagnostics, radiology, skilled nursing, hospice, medical equipment and podiatry. USMM manages over 50,000 high-acuity patients as primary care on an annual basis across 42 offices in 14 states. USMM participated in the Pioneer ACO program through the Michigan Pioneer ACO and assigned slightly over 1,800 patients to the program in Southeast Michigan.
In addition to the savings generated during Performance Year 2, USMM also generated over $3 million in savings during Performance Year 1 of the program on a similar patient population, equivalent to almost 3.5% of total program savings.
USMM focuses on the sickest 5% to 10% of patients who drive over 65% of total healthcare costs. These medically complex patients frequently have multiple chronic conditions, cognitive issues, functional impairments and psychosocial complications that render them high-risk.
By bringing medical care directly into the home, USMM is able to establish a unique patient / provider relationship and insights that cannot be achieved through a traditional office visit. In addition, through its 24x7 Patient Care Center, USMM is able to respond to urgent escalations in illness and medical crises avoiding potential emergency room visits and hospital admissions.
As demonstrated through the Pioneer ACO program, this model results in a reduction in overall healthcare costs, coupled with improvements in quality of care and patient satisfaction.
"USMM has been committed to providing high quality, compassionate and cost-effective in-home care to its patients for over 20 years and will continue to do so," said Mark Mitchell, CEO of USMM. "We are pleased to contribute to the success of the Pioneer ACO Model and are excited to continue to support our partners at CMS in shaping the future of healthcare delivery through models that better align incentives with patient outcomes. We have always believed that the home-delivery medical model can play a large part in addressing the healthcare spending crisis in this country and are thrilled to have demonstrated this through our Pioneer ACO participation."
USMM plans to build on the success of its Pioneer ACO results in 2015 through additional investments in population health capabilities, expansion of value-based initiatives and development of partnerships with commercial payers, health systems, ACOs, and other organizations to support their high-risk populations.
