U.S. Market for Nonbreast Aesthetic Implants Will Decline Due to Widespread Preference for Alternative Treatments

BURLINGTON, Mass., April 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Decision Resources Group finds that the United States market for nonbreast aesthetic implants will decline as alternative treatments such as facial injectables and fat transfer procedures are increasingly preferred over facial and body contouring implants, respectively. Facial implants are very invasive compared to facial injectables, and many patients prefer the impermanent nature of the latter procedure. Likewise, there will continue to be widespread preference for fat transfer procedures because these treatments offer more natural-looking results than their body contouring implant counterparts.

Other key findings from the Medtech 360 report entitled US Markets for Nonbreast Aesthetic Implants 2014:

• Facial Implants: Facial implants comprise over 90 percent of nonbreast aesthetic implant revenues; these procedures are well established compared to body contouring implant procedures, which represent a niche treatment.
• Falling Revenues: Both the facial implant and body contouring implant markets are declining at similar rates. Dermal fillers have become the treatment of choice for this indication because they facilitate more natural movement of the lip and a better aesthetic result. Revenue declines in the body contouring implant segment will be primarily driven by decreasing gluteal augmentation procedures as patients increasingly opt for a "Brazilian butt lift" treatment instead.
• Chin Augmentation: Chin and mandibular procedures will see the most favorable growth because there is currently no alternative treatment for an augmented chin.
• Complications: The frequency and severity of complications associated with implant procedures not only results in patient dissatisfaction, but also limits the number of physicians willing to perform the procedures. Complications such as capsular contracture, implant malposition or displacement, and implant palpability are not uncommon.
